Minor: Toon Tests 1

I've been trying out the aiToon shader and am getting closer to the effect I would like.

There are quite a few settings inside of the shader itself and also a way to adjust the lines in the render settings. There seems to be limited information about how to best use the shader, though Arnold have a good page that describes the settings. Aside from a few problems, this shader is proving to be very useful.

This is how the shader rendered when applied without adjusting the settings. It hasn't affected the way shadows show on the object, but it has added some lines.

I started with adding a ramp to the tonemap on the base and adjusting it, as well as changing the edge width scaling and angle threshold.

After adding the correct colours and adjusting these settings I am quite pleased with this initial test. The main issue I am having is that the width of the lines doesn't behave how I would like when the camera moves. These two renders were taken with the same settings, but the camera is in a different position. Unfortunately, the line width doesn't scale with the rest of the model, which looks quite strange, especially the more extreme the change is.

I am not sure if there is a quick fix for this, I have had a bit of a look around without much luck. If not, I am wondering if there is something more involved that I can plug in to the width scaling that will solve the issue.

Minor: Character Model

Below are some preliminary renders of my model. I have also included some captures of the model and orthographs in Maya. I have deviated slightly from the 2D drawings, in order to more closely capture my character in 3D. I will do some tests with the aiToon shader to further bring this character to life.

Minor: Body Model Progress 4

I have updated the hands and added feet. The hands look much more like my characters hands now. I think I'm almost there with this, I am happy with it.

Here is the whole model. I will make a post with wireframes and some nice renders soon.

Minor Project: Body Model Progress 3

I have done some more sculpting on the body and added a hand. I have been having some trouble with it, but it's much closer to what I want than it was before.

Minor: Body Model Progress 2

I've done some more sculpting around the arms and torso and built the legs. I want to do some more work around the pelvis, but I am quite pleased with how this is going. I might move on to the hands and feet now, and come back if I need to.

Minor: Body Model Progress 1

I've started modelling the body. I've ended up deviating from my orthographs quite a lot with the arms, especially as there were a lot of mistakes with the sizing in them. I have updated the orthographs to make it a bit better and I think that with the legs and hands it will look even better.

These are the changes I've made to the orthgraphs. The ones on the left are from Premise and the updates are on the right.

Minor: Head Model Progress 8

I've sculpted a bit more and added in some eyelashes. I think I'm pretty much there with the head now. Time for the body!

Minor: Head Model Progress 7

I have started adding details such as the ear and eyebrows.

I've just added some lamberts to the model to get a better idea of how closely it resembles my character. It's definitely getting there and I think the eyelashes will make a big difference!

I am making similar mistakes each week, to do with not curving the spine nearly enough. I will keep this in mind for the future.
